Self Care After Your Massage
- Stay hydrated, Drink water! For every 1lb you weigh, drink ½ ounce of water in every 24-hour period. Example: You weight 150 lbs.- Drink 75oz of water. Therapeutic massage stimulates movement of your lymphatic system. Massage helps increase blood flow and releases metabolic waste from the tissue. Being hydrated will help prevent you from becoming overly sore and/or having flu like nausea after your massage.
- Keep it light to moderate: avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours after a massage/bodywork session. Exercise after a session can both increase muscle soreness and compromise the value of the soft tissue work you have just received. “Strenuous exercise” includes activities such as running, weightlifting, or anything high intensity. Light exercise such as walking, swimming, or gentle stretching is OK. One view of this 24-hour recovery period is that sustained pressure on connective body tissue makes it more gel-like. The technical term for this change is thixotropic. This state lasts up to 24 hours, so high-intensity exercise may pull or move the tissue back to old patterns or even induce new injuries. I recommend you work out before your session and then relax afterwards.
